Currently managed by Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service Maria Island includes Darlington which is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property. The island also has many other layers of cultural heritage; outstanding scenery and significant natural values, a Marine Nature Reserve; and a very successful Tasmanian Devil conservation program. The Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority currently manages the majority of the Convict sites in Tasmania including Port Arthur Historic Site, Coal Mines Historic Site and the Cascades Female Factory – so the question is what role should they play in managing the convict site on Maria Island?
