Call for Papers

We are now seeking abstracts for papers for consideration at main conference sessions and for masterclass sessions. Presentations will be 20 or 30 minutes long and need to address innovative and sustainable approaches across the themes of the conference.

Abstracts are to be submitted by email to donna@trctourism.com to be received no later than 3rd March 2021.

Abstracts must

  • Be no longer than 500 words
  • Identify the theme you believe the topic best relates to
  • contain a brief summary of the content areas of your proposed topic
  • be accompanied by a bio-note (max 150 words) and photograph of the speaker (s) showing their expertise and/or knowledge in the subject area
  • have a clear and concise title that conveys a clear message

Submitted abstracts will be assessed against the following criteria

  • alignment with one of the key themes
  • applied learning experiences applicable to trail planning and management
  • clear key learnings and outcomes for delegates (eg from case studies)
  • New, innovative and sustainable concepts

All presenters will be required to cover their own registration fees, accommodation and travel costs.  Presenters will be offered a discounted registration fee.

To enable delegates to interact with presenters we encourage speakers to attend the entire conference.

The primary themes are

  1. Innovation and creative thinking in governance and funding – case studies
  2. Standing out in a competitive market – positioning your trails for success
  3. Engaging communities in trails
  4. Managing the experience
  5. Measuring the triple bottom line

Some thought provokers (but don’t let these limit your own innovative ideas)

  • Over tourism
  • Disaster recovery / risk management
  • Inclusive access
  • Incorporating indigenous tourism
  • Trails operators – we want to hear from you!
  • Green destinations
  • Emerging technology
  • Story telling
  • Strategic partnerships

What did past attendees think?

The Sustainable Trails Conference provided an excellent opportunity to share best practice across a variety of topics from trail building to governance. Each session was valuable in its own right. Great to see the collaboration between our two countries as we all strive to make the most of this growing community.

The Sustainable Trails Conference provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the importance of trails to local economies and tourism, the amount of work going on in this space, and to share and learn from others working in the field.
