Project Description
The Gunaikurnai Tourism Strategy is designed to enhance the Gunaikurnai community’s economic and cultural prosperity through self-determined tourism initiatives. The strategy outlines ten major projects aimed at creating jobs, promoting cultural connections, and fostering economic growth. Key projects include the Gunya Yanakie Nanjet Brataualung, Forestec redevelopment, aquaculture ventures, Buchan Caves Reserves, and the Gippsland Lakes Aquatic Trail.
Each project has a detailed timeline, with some initiatives like the Wangun Amphitheatre and aquaculture trials expected to be completed by 2025, while others like the Gippsland Lakes Aquatic Trail will extend beyond 2026. The strategy emphasises securing partnerships and funding to support project development, including collaborations with Parks Victoria, DEECA, and local councils.
The projects aim to bring Gunaikurnai people back to Country, enhance cultural knowledge, and support the Whole of Country Plan and Economic Development Strategy. The strategy also focuses on developing skills and capacity within the Gunaikurnai community to ensure sustainable tourism management and operations. Efforts are made to contribute to Healing Country, protect cultural heritage, and promote environmental sustainability through tourism initiatives.
Marketing strategies include sharing stories with visitors, developing immersive cultural experiences, and promoting Gunaikurnai tourism products to both domestic and international markets. Effective governance structures are proposed to manage tourism ventures, including a Tourism Advisory Service to support business operations and ensure alignment with GLaWAC principles. The strategy also addresses potential challenges such as funding limitations, skill gaps, and external disruptions, proposing solutions to mitigate these risks.
