Project Description
A major project for management and tourism in the Belum-Temengor National Park (one of the world’s oldest rainforests and significant biodiversity areas) in the far north of Malaysia. The plan re-organised Park management to protect its unique and endangered plant and wildlife, develop visitor infrastructure and improve revenue streams. It also provides opportunities for the local Indigenous communities. Tourism opportunities were assessed for a wide range of tourism products (including adventure ecotourism activities, house boat stays, village stays, fish farming and honey production) and business cases were developed. The plan was approved in early 2012 and is being implemented – including enactment of legislation to protect special areas and development of key infrastructure (roads, wharfs, jetties, accommodation). Tourism arrivals have increased and increases in local incomes are reported.
