Project Description
The Dambeemangaddee Tour Guide Program was developed by the Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC) to appropriately build confidence and capabilities of Dambeemangaddee people interested in leading tours on Country. The Dambeemangaddee Tour Guide program is one of the ways for Dambeemangaddee people to share stories with visitors.
TRC supported DAC and Elders with the preparation of the Dambeemangaddee Sharing Our Stories Guidebook to ensure cultural knowledge and stories are shared in the right way and by the right people.
The Guidebook is for Dambeemangaddee Tour Guides to use as a resource to support appropriate storytelling and sharing of knowledge with visitors to Dambeemangaddee Country.
This guidebook has been prepared through:
- Research of existing books and resources about Dambeemangaddee people, culture and Country.
- Understanding target audiences to share stories with, the types of information they are interested in and how they like to learn.
- Workshops with Dambeemangaddee Elders and tour guides to decide what stories and knowledge are appropriate for Dambeemangaddee guides to share with visitors
Four themes were developed for the tour guides with overviews of the stories appropriate to share with visitors, the places on tours where they can be shared and recommended ways of sharing by using props, cultural activities or guided walks.
The Sharing our Stories guidebook will now be built into the Dambimangari TAFE Tour Guide training program, supporting localised and approved cultural content to be shared by visitors.
