Project Description
A comprehensive and workable framework to assist a region of 9 local government councils and numerous trail stakeholders in south west Victoria, Australia to develop the region as a leading trail destination. The project produced 5 reports. A Vision and Business Case sets out the rationale for investing in trails and cycle tourism and makes a case for generation of economic and employment benefits. A Marketing Strategy provides a framework for consistent positioning of the whole region for walking and cycling. A Cycle Tourism Strategy sets out strategies and actions to improve road, trail and mountain biking opportunities and increase visitation. An Action Plan provides an overview of strategies and actions for walking and cycling opportunities and trails development. The Guidelines for Trail Planning, Design and Management is a toolkit for state and local government agencies, community groups and investors on how to plan, design and manage consistently and collaboratively for exception trail experiences across the region. In 2015 this project was the 2015 winner in the Planning Institute of Australia (Victoria) Awards for Planning Excellence in the Best Planning Ideas – Large Ideas Category.
