Mount Isa

Project Description

TRC Tourism developed a strategic report to guide Mount Isa’s economic transformation through tourism, helping the city diversify beyond its traditional mining industry. With the impending mine closures, this initiative focuses on strengthening tourism as a sustainable economic driver, enhancing liveability, and fostering engagement with local Indigenous communities, particularly the Kalkadoon people. The vision is to establish Mount Isa as a vibrant destination with a thriving tourism sector, cultural richness, and improved infrastructure.

Challenges and TRC Solutions

Mount Isa faces several hurdles, including economic reliance on mining, workforce displacement, social disruptions, and tourism seasonality. Additionally, gaps in governance, infrastructure, and market visibility limit the sector’s potential.

To overcome these challenges, TRC proposed:

  • Destination Management Enhancements – Appointing a dedicated Destination Manager, strengthening governance, and developing an industry-focused tourism strategy.
  • Marketing and Brand Strategy – Maximising existing branding, refining market positioning, and strengthening digital engagement.
  • Tourism Product Development – Expanding Indigenous-led experiences, improving visitor infrastructure, and developing new accommodation options.
  • Large Enablement Projects – Recommending major projects like a Kalkadoon Cultural Centre, a Lake Moondarra Master Plan, and an Innovation & Business Incubation Hub.

Key Achievements & Outcomes

  • A clear strategic roadmap to revitalise Mount Isa’s tourism industry.
  • Stronger community and Indigenous engagement, ensuring the Kalkadoon people play a central role in tourism development.
  • Identified high-value tourism opportunities, including cultural tourism, outdoor adventure, and eco-accommodation.
  • Recommendations for governance improvements, ensuring leadership and collaboration within the tourism sector.
