Project Description

Mulligans Flat is an outstanding woodland biodiversity asset of national and local significance situated on the edge of Canberra’s northern suburbs. It is the site of a major ecological restoration project (run in partnership with research institutions and the community) that includes re-introduction of locally-extinct species such as the Eastern Bettong.

TRC led this project which was conducted with Locales (an interpretation concept company) and dsb Landscape Architects. The Concept Plan and Interpretation Strategy aimed to provide high-quality recreation, interpretative, learning and education experiences for visitors and the local community.

Extensive consultation with managers, researchers and the community was conducted to assist in development of concepts. The project identified interpretative themes and storylines (relating to natural and cultural values and ecological restoration); gateways; interpretative hubs; storytelling loops; and recommendations for signage, digital mobile and online interpretation. Indicative designs were delivered for local fauna ‘characters’ (as part of storytelling and signage), destination, infrastructure and orientation maps. Indicative costings, implementation requirements and development stages were also provided.
