Project Description

The Wangetti Trail is planned to be one of Australia’s leading adventure-based ecotourism experiences and aims to attract visitors on a national and, potentially, international scale.

Approximately 90.4 kilometres in length, the dual-use walking and mountain biking track will travel through Tropical North Queensland’s coast and hinterland from Port Douglas to Palm Cove. It is currently conceived
as a dual direction trail, with the section from Wangetti to Palm Cove as mountain bike only.

With the detailed alignment for the Trail having been released in early 2019, TRC was engaged to provide specialist trails and tourism advice on the:

– proposed use(s) for the trail, alternative options and/or combinations;
– proposed procurement process and market engagement and alternatives; and
– appetite for the Wangetti Trail in the Australasian adventure/ecotourism market.

Consideration needed to be taken into account of the Registration of Interest (ROI) document that had been issued calling for submissions to deliver private eco-accommodation and provide tour guidance on the Wangetti Trail with the option to offer complementary commercial ecotourism activities.

Advice and recommendations provided by TRC pertained specifically to balancing the needs of the intended market/s with those of the potential eco-accommodation and tour operators in order to elicit best response to the ROI.

The Wangetti Trail aims to deliver an iconic international ecotourism experience with direct economic benefits to regional Queensland and local Traditional Owners.
