Project Description
A funding initiative through the NSW Department of Primary Industries, TRC worked closely with Yuin Ngura Custodians and stakeholders to develop a business plan for First Nations cultural tourism experiences on the Shoalhaven River, South Coast NSW. In partnership with Bundanon Trust, Yuin Ngura aims to deliver immersive cultural cruises and training programs that create economic opportunities for local Yuin people while sharing their deep cultural heritage with visitors.
At the heart of this initiative is the Bangli Cultural River Cruise, a guided experience connecting guests to Yuin culture, storytelling and Country.
One of the key challenges was developing a sustainable business model that balances authentic cultural representation with long-term financial viability. TRC worked closely with Yuin Ngura and stakeholders to develop a business plan focused on:
- Articulating a clear vision, aspirations and goals to achieve.
- Defining products and a clear pathway to activation.
- Capacity building and training to strengthen local skills.
- Phased business growth to ensure long-term sustainability.
- Marketing activities to establish a strong visitor base.
- Structured partnerships to enhance resources and visibility.
The plan outlines a long-term vision for job creation, skills development and increased visitor awareness of First Nations culture. By setting clear financial and operational goals, it ensures the business remains sustainable through strategic partnerships, grant funding opportunities and targeted marketing.
Key recommendations include:
- Securing funding for vessel acquisition.
- Implementing comprehensive training programs for Yuin guides.
- Leveraging partnerships for marketing and business development.
This initiative supports Yuin Ngura Custodians on their cultural tourism business journey, fostering reconciliation, cultural exchange and economic wellbeing through sustainable tourism.
