Project Description
TRC Tourism was engaged by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) to develop two key resources for trail management in Western Australia:
- Western Australian Hiking Trail Management Guidelines
- Western Australian Horse Trail Management Guidelines
These guidelines were developed to ensure that future trails are sustainable recreational assets, not liabilities. They provide a vital reference for land managers, trail professionals, and community trail groups—offering clear guidance and a consistent approach to trail planning, design, construction, and maintenance across the state.
Separate guidelines for hiking and horse riding were produced to reflect the unique needs of each activity, while promoting a shared foundation of sustainable practices. Both documents establish best-practice principles that support the creation and stewardship of high-quality trail experiences, while protecting the natural and cultural values of Western Australia’s diverse landscapes.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in the consistent and coordinated development of trail networks across the state. The guidelines are intended to balance user enjoyment with long-term environmental responsibility—ensuring trails remain accessible, safe, and ecologically sound for future generations.
TRC Tourism collaborated closely with DBCA, DLGSC, Traditional Owners, trail managers, and local organisations to ensure the guidelines were informed by a broad range of perspectives. By combining international best practice with local expertise and on-the-ground knowledge, we delivered practical, regionally relevant resources tailored to Western Australia’s unique trail environments.
We are proud to have led a thorough and inclusive consultation process and to have contributed to resources that will guide the sustainable development and management of hiking and horse-riding trails throughout Western Australia for years to come.
