Destination Gippsland, with the support of partners including the Latrobe Valley Authority and the Gippsland Local Government Network, were investing in a Smart Specialisation project to understand the likely model of a social enterprise that would have the greatest chance of success in Gippsland. The enterprise would be focused on trail maintenance, planning and construction.
TRC Tourism were engaged to complete an audit which allowed a more detailed understanding of the maintenance amounts and models used across Gippsland for trails by their managers and the community, and the investment pipeline into trail construction and capital development.
As a part of the audit an updated trails database was also provided for Gippsland by TRC Tourism. The database was compiled in a way to provide information for a range of projects or uses. It was comprised mainly of trails with a visitor economy component.
