Following the ‘Coastal Way’ itinerary, one of seven self-drive road trips developed by the South Australian Tourism Commission, TRC has been out in the field this week learning first-hand about some of the visitor experience initiatives of the Yorke Peninsula Council in regional South Australia.
Located at some of the most beautiful and scenic coastal areas in the region, 19 bush camping sites are managed by the Council. Fishing, surfing, beach walking and star gazing can be enjoyed with permits that are not restricted to one particular camp ground, but instead allow visitors to camp at any of designated camp grounds located throughout the Yorke Peninsula. The permits have varying durations and ‘local rates’ for ratepayers have been established, which ensures access to these scenic spots can be enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike. An easy-to-navigate online booking and payment process has also been provided to ensure a smooth booking process for visitors before they arrive.
Many of these bush camping sites also link to sections of Walk The Yorke, a 500km coastal walking trail which features infrastructure such as trail markers, bollards, bench seats, interpretive signage and shelters. Some sections of the trail are shared with cyclists and visitors can expect to walk on coastal paths, roads, stretches of beach and through part of Innes National Park.
Yorke Peninsula Council are currently in the process of developing their Coastal Management Strategy and TRC look forward to seeing the initiatives that are put in place to protect this incredible landscape and which will enable the Council to continue to deliver an outstanding coastal and nature-based visitor experience in regional South Australia.
