TRC considered the significant level of existing visitation to the toilets as well as role of the proposed Kawakawa visitor centre in the context of other developments planned to maintain Hundertwasser’s legacy including the Whangarei Hundertwasser Art Gallery and at his home at Kaurinui.
The centre at Kawakawa will enhance the experience of the many thousands of visitors who come to the town to visit the unique public toilets in the main street – the only building completed by Hundertwasser in New Zealand.
The Business Case found that up to 12 direct and indirect jobs could be generated by the development.
In November 2016 TRC completed a Business Case for the proposed interpretive and community service centre in Kawakawa. TRC were engaged by Northland Inc to prepare the business case for the proposed centre which will celebrate the life of Frederick Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist, architect and philosopher who spent many years in Northland before his death in 2000.
