TRC worked on the project for Tourism Western Australia under a TQual grant in 2013 when we were contracted to consult with interested Aboriginal communities to evaluate the ways each community would develop camping products on their land and use their unique cultural experience to enable visitors to interact with Aboriginal people and culture in an authentic way. Imintji community went on to implement the plan and build their campground with TWA. The PIA judges commented that “the immersion of the project team with the local community was integral to its ultimate success…the Camping with Custodians Project has enabled the Imintji Aboriginal Community to develop a capacity to manage their land and resources as part of a network of community enterprises and to use it as a platform upon which to develop further value adding activities”. TRC Director Janet Mackay said she was “delighted to see the project implemented and that it had been recognised as best practice in planning at a national level”.
