This week’s outback adventure saw our Director Janet and Alice Springs Consultant Tracey journey through the NT’s Barkly region to the Historic Town of Newcastle Waters. A vital historic link on the Stuart Highway between the townships of Katherine to the north (400km) and Elliot to the south (20km), Newcastle Waters is rich with stories of Traditional custodians, European explorers, pastoral stations, gold mining, dusty droving days, World War II, the Royal Flying Doctors Service, the Wave Hill Walk Off and life in the outback today. In addition to the town’s vibrant history, is the stunning backdrop of Newcastle Creek, which at current count attracts over 90 bird species! We’ve spent the last few days with our project partners Brave and Curious co-creating opportunities with the Marlinja Aboriginal Community, the Newcastle Waters Pastoral Station, Tourism NT and a range of other important stakeholders, all excited about sharing stories and breathing new life into the historic township. Now to the drawing board to animate the ideas!
